Ceramic Coating vs Wax, Which Is Worth It

One lasts a season, the other lasts years. Where the money actually goes, compared honestly.

Wax and ceramic coating do the same broad job, protect the paint and make it look better, but they are not competing versions of the same product. They sit at opposite ends of a scale of effort, cost and how long the result lasts.

The Short Version

Wax Or SealantCeramic Coating

Weeks to a few monthsYears, when prepared properly
Minimal preparationDecontamination, correction and a panel wipe first
Warm, slightly softer lookHarder, glassier, more reflective

What Wax Is Genuinely Good At

Wax is cheap, forgiving and pleasant to use. On a car that gets attention every few weeks anyway it is perfectly sensible, and on older single stage paint many people prefer the warmth it gives.

The trade off is that it is largely gone by the end of a season, faster on a car parked outside through an Auckland summer.

What A Coating Changes

Because it bonds rather than sits, a coating survives washing. The surface stays slick for years, so road film releases under a normal wash instead of needing to be scrubbed, and the paint keeps its gloss rather than dulling between waxes.

It also takes the UV hit instead of the clear coat, which is what keeps dark paint from going chalky. In New Zealand sun that is not a small thing.

Where The Cost Difference Actually Goes

Almost none of the gap is the bottle. It is the preparation: decontamination, paint correction and a panel wipe, all of which have to happen before a coating is applied and none of which a wax requires.

That preparation is also why a coating looks better than a wax on the same car. The paint underneath was corrected first.

Which One Suits Your Car

  • A car you sell in a year: wax, or a detail with protection
  • A new car you intend to keep: coating, before the paint picks up wash marks
  • A daily driver parked outside: coating, for the UV and the easier washing
  • A weekend car under cover, detailed often: either, and wax is no embarrassment
  • Paint already swirled: correction first, whichever you choose after
